Born January 26, 1935, so a contemporary of Panno. In 1952 he became champion of Iceland for the first time. He achieved the IGM-title in 1958. He has long been one of the Best of the West and his career shows many successes. Twice he became first in the Hoogovens’ tournament, viz. in 1959 and, 17 years later, in 1976. In 1978 he succeeded Max Euwe as FIDE-president. He has played occasionally in the past few years. He beat Larsen 5-3 in a rapid match in 2003. link to the FIDE website.
